Yankee Candle just announced its Scent of the Year for 2020

‘Awaken’ the scent for a new decade, is designed to help you feel centred.

Yankee Candle just announced its second annual ‘Scent of the Year’, and this time around, it’s all about simplicity and transparency. The scent, called “Awaken,” has top notes of sheer peony and crystal freesia; mid notes of clary sage essential oil, orcanox, and driftwood; and base notes of white amber, patchouli, and mineral musk.

A sparkling, inspiring scent focused on a unique, exhilarating mineral aura, with grounding notes of driftwood and amber.

Top: Crisp and Clean Notes, Sheer Peony, Crystal Freesia
Mid: Clary Sage Essential Oil, Orcanox, Driftwood
Base: White Amber, Patchouli, Mineral Musk

A quick reminder back to floral notes of last years launch, (the first year of what will hopefully continue to be an annual tradition) and the scent was ‘One Together’; described as refreshingly distinctive chorus of floral notes including Gilly Flower, Star Jasmine and Miracle Flower, with hints of Black Pepper, Mandarin and Nectarine, and an undertone of Amber, Sandalwood and Suede Blush.

“We’ve learned through our research for Scent of the Year that there is a significant cultural shift away from always wanting more: More options, more communication, more material clutter,” Anna Whitton, vice president of marketing at The Yankee Candle Company said in a press release. “Increasingly, people want to simplify their lives, unplug from the constant chatter of technology, and reconnect with themselves and with those they care about. Consumers are seeking out meaningful experiences that bring them a greater sense of self.

Jennifer Genson, Yankee Candle’s Fragrance Development Lead, noted that the scent is also perfect to start the year off right. “Awaken was developed to inspire you to open your eyes to the simple beauty of the everyday, giving you a clear, bright vision for the new year,” she said.

Ingredient led fine fragrance ranges are everywhere this year. Home Fragrance Edit: A destination collection inspired by scent memories

This collection was launched earlier this year by Brooklyn Candle Studio, but it’s too beautiful not to share. Destination candles have become all about scent memories as capturing the ‘essence’ of a place is exactly that. The reason we all love coconut, sun-cream scent, summer rain, vanilla or firewood are the memories we attach to them and what they remind us of and this collection captures some of the worlds most popular places using scent.

Wildflowers are still hot: Jo Malone re-launches Poppy & Barley

Originally part of the limited-edition Jo Malone English Fields collection from last year, Poppy & Barley has been plucked from the harvest and given a stand alone cologne and body & hand wash.

Iconic, vibrant poppies. Dancing in colour across England’s meadows. A lively floral scent, enhanced by rose and violet and topped with juicy blackcurrants. Borrowed from the succulent cereal fields, where grains and flowers mingle, our poppies are cocooned by bran and cotton-soft barley. This inviting scent is a living landscape: where colourful poppies emblazon the rich gold harvest.

Home Fragrance Scent Trends: Cocktails notes make perfect home scents

The cocktail and drinks trend is still in full swing. Lime Mojito, pink fizz from Prosecco to Gin and citrus infusions top the list in summer 2019. Looking back at the New Product Report for Home Fragrance so far this year, the influence crossing over from cocktails, both traditional ‘flavours’ and new concoctions look set to continue.

This latest collection from Homesick Candles is beautiful. It’s so important these days to convey fragrance types and scent online – packaging and product shots are key and I think you’ll agree that they have done a fabulous job! Read on to see the new collection plus some of this years launches based on the cocktail/beverage theme that have been featured in some of this years New Product Reports.

The Homesick candles limited edition collection is made up of 3 key ‘cocktails’. I love how decorative home fragrances now come with top, middle and base notes – it just gives it that more sophisticated and complex feel.

Midsummer Mojito
Top: Kaffir Lime, Lemon Wedge, Iced accord
Mid: Mint Leaves, Verbena, Raw Coconut
Bottom: Peppermint Candy, Rum, Sugared Vanilla

Sunshine Spritz
Top: Ruby Pomegranate, Bitter Oranges
Mid: Wild Berries, Limoncello Splash, Quince
Bottom: Blushed Prosecco, Wine Spritzer, Tonka Bean

Poolside Pina
Top: Coconut Waters, Lemon Blossom, Lime
Mid: Orange Rind, Tonka Bean, Pineapple Halves
Bottom: Misted Musk, Coconut Milk, Tiare Flower

Launched by US brand Pier 1 these were a bit of a deviation from the cocktail theme, but still influenced by the alcohol/beverage theme. Obviously Grape was a key note! The pots are beautiful as well – lovely clear, coloured glass and cork lids ready to be re-purposed after use.

In May, Partylite launched Passionfruit Prosecco; a fizzy mix of crisp apple and bright lemon mingled with Summer berries and soft peach.

Bath and Body Works launched ‘Summer Sippin’ with:

Island Margarita –  Sweet Mandarin, Island Mango, Sea Salt

Peach  Bellini – Succulent White Peach, Sparkling Prosecco, Sweet Orange

Pink Apple Punch – Green Apple, Juicy Honeycrisp, Pink Melon Punch

Ikea launched its ‘Kanske’ collection, which comprised of 2 limited edition scents inspired by summer drinks and the ‘cocktail theme’; Lime & Mint and Guava & Strawberry.

Lastly, but not least and again inspired by the lime infused mojito (everyone loves a mojito!) the new Jangala candle by Maison La Bougie is filled to the brim with hydrating refreshment and relaxed Cuban vibes.
The scent description reads; Invigorating notes of mint and herbaceous basil are muddled with crushed sugar, ice, and a twist of lemon and lime. Irresistibly fresh and punchy, the Mojito fragrance is a perfect summer scent – light it on weekdays when drinking rum isn’t an option, to get the blissed-out holiday feeling without the hangover.

Scent Notes: Basil, Blackcurrant, Lemon, Lime, Mint, Thyme

So in summary, the trend for beverages is still inspiring home fragrance and will continue to do so as we change seasons. Fall or Autumn (depending which side of the ocean you’re on) will be packed with merry tipples in this trend trackers opinion. The cocktail theme is also a perfect way to introduce limited editions based on classics and also notes of the moment so this trend can easily be considered a ‘megatrend’ – meaning you can’t go far wrong if you use it to inspire collections for years to come!

Ingredient tracking: Watermelon is #trending in personal care in 2019

Each month as I track trends for my New Product Reports, Bath and Body Trends and Key Insight Reports, I see patterns begin to emerge. Certain ingredients are favoured more than others (Raspberry in home fragrance for example, Rose in skincare, guarana in men’s launches), but this summer (although it’s not a ‘new, new’ ingredient) we are seeing juicy, bright and ultra hydrating watermelon firmly in the spotlight for personal care.

The watermelon effect is down to Glow Recipe, a Korean beauty inspired brand, where watermelon is a star. Their key product is a face mask which has a wait list of 8000 people and sells 1 every 3 minutes (scroll down to watch a video of it being made of the brands Instagram). A Sephora bestseller with $30 US Dollars of sales in 2018 makes it a hot commercial ingredient.

Watermelon is a fruit similar to pumpkin and cantaloupe, that is made of 92% water, which means that a product containing watermelon will be extra hydrating for your skin. The fruit also includes Vitamin A, B6 and C, which help to aid the immune system and allows your skin to benefit from antioxidants.

In July’s edition of the New Product Report for Bath & Body I highlighted some of the key new launches with a watermelon theme in the new notes and ingredients section of the monthly report. Check them out below.

Crabtree & Evelyn signals a new era after focusing on their heritage

Reading news at the beginning of 2019 that Crabtree and Evelyn were disappearing from the retail space and going online save for one retail concept store was not surprising. The brand has a loyal following, but being an avid product trend tracker (it’s part of my job after all) it was easy to see they were leaving innovation and product development behind and simply focusing on their cult best sellers.

Cosmetics Design did a very good article on what went wrong, but essentially it was relying on its legacy rather than connecting with its customers needs or diversifying to meet the demands of new customer bases.

However, fortunes look set to change, as this month the brand debuts a redesigned e-commerce site and content platform. Not only have they managed to keep their older brand lines for their loyal customers, but they’ve come up with a refreshing new and simple idea that really fits their brand story/heritage and fits with a new generation of consumer. Inspired by Cyrus Harvey, wanderlust and nature enthusiast and also the brands founder the new ethos is; Born Curious. Grown Wild.

The new and refreshed website and carefully created social media platforms focus on 2 new collections named..Crabtree and..Evelyn! Crabtree is a gender-less collection with apple as a core ingredient focus, whilst Evelyn focuses on rose.

The website sums the collections up: Crabtree; For him. For her. For every lifestyle. Meet the unisex collection that’s refreshingly different.

Evelyn Rose; born from a rebellious desire to do things differently, a rose-inspired collection that’s not all soft and floral – it’s got thorns and attitude.

The Crabtree collection is designed to be shared and the unisex collection balances both sweet and spicy notes so it doesn’t step into masculine or feminine territory. The crabapple influence hasn’t been forgotten though and many of the products contain apple extract, apple fruit water and apple AHA’s.

The Raw Instinct Scent opens with a burst of unexpected fruit (citrusy pomelo and lemon-laced kumquat) – it’s refreshingly distinct.

  • Top Notes: Pomelo – refreshing citrus, Kumquat – sweetness with a hint of lemon and pine.
  • Middle Notes: Eucalyptus – airy, green aroma, Apple blossom – delicately floral, Jasmine – subtly sweet.
  • Base notes: Vetiver smoke – earthy to add depth, Papyrus – a pinch of spice, Guaiac woods – for longevity.

The 8 piece collection includes; Refresh + Renew Face Foam, Renew + Nourish Hand Cream, Cleanse + Awaken Shower Gel, Smooth + Refine Body Lotion, Buff + Invigorate Body Bar and Raw Instinct Scent.

Evelyn Rose is a modern scent with a collection that puts skin care as a primary focus.

Femme de Force, the fine fragrance of the collection, bottles up the fiery spirit of a rose and detonates attitude with every spray. The range includes Soft Touch Face Foam, Lustrous Body Oil, Satin Hand Cream, Femme De Force Scent, Silky Body Lotion and Velvet Body Melt.

  • Top notes: Italian Lemon – a burst of citrus, Elemi – aromatic resin, Olibanum – sharp frankincense, Cassis – refreshing blackberry.
  • Heart notes: Rose – a woody rose that’s not your average pretty petal, Nutmeg – for added warmth, Cashmere woods – harmonic blend of musk and wood.
  • Base notes: Vetiver – adds an earthy edge, Guaiac wood – an exotic wood that has hints of tarmac and smokiness, Musk – for a sensuous finish.

The brand is losing its traditional heritage products either. In another very clever brand development they have kept the old, bestselling products and simply renamed the collection ‘The Archives‘.

I really have to say that I think the new collections are clever, simple and thoughtful. They have a personality and story as well as key ingredients and on trend product formats. 2 of the biggest trend influences have been merged. K-beauty is all about more and Scandi Beauty is all about less and I think this brand has released a really good capsule collection combining this ideas in 2 core collections, that more importantly, can be added to in order to keep it fresh and on trend for the new generation of consumers. Bravo Team C&E!
