Yankee Candle 2021; sneak peek at the new scents and products

Fragrance Trends Yankee Candle

Here’s a preview of what new scents are coming from Yankee Candle in 2021. A definite tropical feel! The ‘Scent of the Year 2021’ or SotY21 as I’ve dubbed it, is shrouded in secrecy, although I’m betting on something destination inspired – maybe woody-gourmand-oriental. We’ve had floral and this year it was fresh so I think comforting will be in for 2021!  EDIT * After writing this I found out a few more details about SotY21: An immersive and exotic fragrance, at it’s heart is the grounding note of warm ginger, with surrounding notes of starfruit and warm vanilla spice. The fragrance will inspire you to step into 2021 energised and ready to experience the world.

I also included details of confirmed returning favourites, details on the new Elevation scents and also some new product formats that are due out.

Last Paradise Collection; Part 1

The Last Paradise: You’ve found paradise at last…rare and exotic notes of rainforest fruits and flowers lure you into a fragrance experience like no other.

Method hand soap celebrates women in design

Method have announced a limited edition hand soap collection in partnership with the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum as a way to celebrate women in design. Connie Chen, Method’s Vice President of Brands said in a press release. “Our partnership with Cooper Hewitt is meaningful because, together, we are shining a light on pioneering women in design, whose impressive lives, talent and vision are an inspiration for designers–and the greater creative community–to this day.”

Wowsers (love that word – pretty sure it was Inspector Gadget, but anyway) – 2020 has been a bit of a strange year so far, but luckily for me I’ve spent most of it immersed in new launches and fragrance trends, compiling monthly reports and working on new ideas for my business and website, which has kept me productive and happy.

We had a mini slow down of the home fragrance market in June, but July has made up for it already. In the fragrance industry we always talk about the amount of fine fragrance launches per year, but unless you are a Home Fragrance New Product Report Subscriber, you probably don’t realise how many launches there are in the home fragrance/ air care sector; its at least 1200+ per year! The market has grown tremendously in the last few years and is still going strong.

However, I know with everything going on that many people haven’t had the time to keep on top of the releases (ahem. blatant sales plug; never miss a launch by subscribing to our reports), so I’ve tried to do a comprehensive list of the ‘world’s favourite home fragrance brand’ below, so you can scroll through the Yankee Candle fragrance trends in 2020, from your, now very familiar, home office!  I’ve added both the new UK/EU scents and US editions as there are different launches dependent on destination country.

Scent of the Year; January 2020

We talked about this scent on the blog at the beginning of the year.

The scent, “Awaken,” has top notes of sheer peony and crystal freesia; mid notes of clary sage essential oil, orcanox, and driftwood; and base notes of white amber, patchouli, and mineral musk. A sparkling, inspiring scent focused on a unique, exhilarating mineral aura, with grounding notes of driftwood and amber.

New Product Development

Scent Plug bases – Technology has moved on since the current bases were introduced almost 20 years ago and the new Scent Plugs will provide a more even and consistent fragrance that will fill the room. No change to the shape of the refills – so they can still be used with both the current Scent Plugs and the new style.

Wax Melts as we know them are gone! They’ve been a mainstay of the range for over 30 years and they got a makeover for the new decade. Gone is the flat tart-like shape (with hard to open plastic wrapping) and it is replaced by a new cup style in an easy to open recyclable packaging. The new wax formula which will allow a higher level of fragrance oil – providing a stronger scent.

Hand wash dominates beauty searches

Hand wash is still trending and capsules and tablets are moving from homecare to hand care

Consumers are all a little hygiene obsessed at the moment due to the COVID-19 outbreak. According to Trendanalytics, who track consumer searches, YOY this April, the following terms were showing huge increases;  Hand wipes;+1,981.9%, How to wash your hands; +732.3%, Gel hand soap; +721.9% and Refillable body wash; +533%.

Obviously, it’s no surprise that the hand care sector is seeing a huge increase in demand at the moment, but it’s also interesting to see that refillable washes are also trending. At the beginning of the outbreak if was suggested that consumers may prefer single use packaging for hygiene reasons. 

However, as the hand care market is now expanding rapidly, added to the fact that hand soap was, for a while,  difficult to get hold of there has been an upsurge of interest in refillable options, not just the liquid refill options that most brands now offer, but the tablet and capsule format – like the ones we are used to seeing in our homecare products. We mentioned Blueland (who offer a refillable- tablet based hand wash) in our new Hand Care Category Report and as the ‘war’ on plastic continues this area will be key for innovative launches.

One of the newest releases in this category is Gelo; (the brand is about to hit $10 million in sales this year) an eco-friendly way to wash your hands. Instead of buying new hand soap bottles or refilling one with liquid soap, Gelo’s concentrated cleansing pods provide the same deep clean with less impact on the environment. Just pop two in the bottle, fill it with water, shake it up and you’re good to go. The direct to consumer range currently consists of 4 variants.

Super premium scents with sanitising properties

Argentinian fragrance house Fueguia 1833, has released a sanitising perfume collection, tapping a trend that is set to mark the post-COVID-19 beauty landscape

Sanitising was never a word thought about much in the fragrance and beauty world. However, since the coronavirus pandemic this looks set to change. As companies worldwide begin to add sanitisers and more hand care products than ever before to their core collections Fueguia has released the first stage of its new and very premium, sanitising range.

Introducing; Fueguia BioActive Molecules; a new the range that aims to offer the brand’s signature scents in a sanitising versions for skin and textiles.

The formulation created by the label’s founder Julian Bedel incorporates four types of disinfection working in synergy. 

The new product are comprised of a stabilized Chlorine dioxide (CIO2); a safe compound known for it’s effectiveness in deactivating SARS-Coronavirus, Antrax, Influenza, Hepatitis B and similar, combined with 45 medicinal plants with a proven biocide effect, 70% organic ethanol and a surfactant (soap) that acts breaking the virus lipid bi-layer. 

The company, according to the fonder, was never started ‘just to create perfumes’, but rather as by product of exploring the power of traditional medicine in the region of Patagonia, Chaco, Pampa and Andes. Bedel says that his approach is “creating scented products from a scientific, artistic mind not from a commercial one.”

A hand sanitizing product is also included in the collection, but doesn’t reference any existing Fueguia 1833 perfume. It still has a mild scent given by the blend of 45 plants, but it only comes in 30ml.

So far, 80 out of the more than 100 Fueguia 1833 fragrances have been offered in the sanitising version on the brand’s e-commerce site  — including Agua Magnoliana; with notes of Jasmine, Magnolia and Sandalwood, Alba (the old name for Scotland); with Scots Pine, Bog Myrtle  and Heather, Ceniza de Coca; with Styrax, Coca Leaf and Ambergris,  Valle de la Luna; with Iris, Sandalwood & Amber,  Linnaeus; with notes of Vetiver, Olibanum and Cardamom and Thays; with Mate Leaf, Osmanthus and Green Tea. 

Available in the single 100ml. format, the Fueguia BioActive Molecules scents retail from €90 to €165, depending on the fragrance. Prices are significantly less expensive compared to the pure perfumes alternatives; for instance, the Agua Magnoliana fragrance retailing at €266 euros for 100-ml. is priced €100 in its sanitising version.

The range has been in development over a year however the global pandemic accelerated the timeline. “Our idea was to launch our full biocide cosmetics range during 2020,” said Bedel. Initially releasing the Skin & Textile range they will leave the rest for the second part of the year and release it at a slower pace. This is also seen as a ‘pre-launch’, as they will keep updating the formula if they find new conclusions on current research. (Source WWD) 

Japanese consumer giant Kao is launching a new brand straight into the US market via Amazon

MyKirei is the first new brand the Japanese consumer giant has developed and launched specifically for the U.S. market, and is meant to be a chance for the company to gain some name recognition with US consumers

KAO is the 10th largest beauty company in the world, according to data from WWD Beauty Inc’s Top 100 list. In 2019, the owner of brands such as Jergens, Bioré, Curél, John Frieda, Molton Brown, Goldwell and Oribe, brought in 621 billion yen, or $5.6 billion in sales. Despite the presence of several of its key brands in the U.S. market, Kao is not a household name like, for example, Procter & Gamble for consumers in the US. The company now wants to raise its profile with the western consumer.

With that mind the beauty giant has debuted MyKirei via Amazon. Despite launching during a pandemic the new brand has incorporated many key market trends to help ensure its success.

Firstly, the product portfolio is simple and contains a shampoo, conditioner and hand wash with plant based and 95% biodegradable formulas.

The entire concept takes inspiration from Kirei (the word “kirei” in Japanese is roughly translated to mean clean and tidy in English), which encompasses a way of living that’s centered on beauty and cleanliness, simplicity, balance, minimalism and sustainability. This sensibility has been revered by Japanese people for years and MyKirei aims to introduce a more eco-friendly way of living to the west.

Whilst the packaging stands upright, like the majority of personal care packaging for shampoos, conditioners and hand washes this range uses 50% less plastic in comparison – it gets its rigidity from an air fill. Additionally, the novel design helps to prevent contamination and makes it easy to use all the product to the very last drop.

MyKirei’s initial three products — a shampoo, conditioner and a hand wash priced at $18 each, launched exclusively on Amazon on Wednesday, April 22, in time for Earth Day, with ingredients that are authentic to Japan, including yuzu, rice water and tsubaki flower.

Marie Claire Perfume Awards 2020

We know that fine fragrance is likely to take a hit this year. The global pandemic means that luxury sectors, like perfumes, are probably going to decline. Consumers won’t have the money or literally can’t get to the shops to try new launches (perhaps the perfect time to bring back magazine testers in a big way??). The NPD group are predicting double digit decline at around 58% for the luxury and prestige sectors. 

However, there is more awareness now than ever from consumers about the power of scent. The ability to provide comfort and familiarity, to enhance mood in a positive way and to promote self care. Without the ability to go out and smell fragrances themselves, consumers will be relying even more on articles from beauty magazines and industry awards than ever before so, as part of my trend tracking across the consumer market here’s what won recently at Marie Claire.

Best female perfume:Gucci Memoire

It is a singular and non-gendered fragrance which wins this prize for the best female perfume. Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, tasked master perfumer Alberto Morillas to build a perfume around Roman chamomile

The scent is also infused with honeyed jasmine petals and coated with a cloud of musk, cedar and sandalwood. On the skin, it is soft, delightful and subtle. The bottle is inspired by a vintage model of the house, in fluted glass, tinted with green.

Prize for audacity: Idole by Lancôme

Designed by three female perfumers; Shyamala Maisondieu, Nadège Le Garlantezec and Adriana Medina, with a new ‘glow’ accord.

Idôle’s ultra-slim bottle appears to fuse with the hand so that the boundary between skin and fragrance vanishes. The 15 mm thick bottle – the thinnest on the market, designed by Chafik Gasmi – looks like a smartphone, but is elegantly dressed in a gold rim and cap.

Prize for the best female bottle: Libre by Yves Saint Laurent

Everything in this object reflects elegance and tension between masculine and feminine. The graphic glass object interpreted by designer Suzanne Dalton is transcended by the house’s famous gold Cassandre, as if sealed and lying at right angles to the bottle. A golden chain wrapped around the neck contrasts with the massive black cap.

This bottle perfectly echoes the scent orchestrated by Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm: a virile but fresh lavender, reinvented and feminized with an absolute of sweet orange blossom then bewitched by vanilla and a hint of ambergris. 

Prize for the best male perfume: K by Dolce Gabbana

Inspired by the king’s playing card, this fragrance deliciously transports you to Tuscany. Imagined by Daphné Bugey and Nathalie Lorson, it soars on zest of blood orange and Sicilian lemon, glazed with juniper berry, warms gently thanks to an ultra-refined heart composed of geranium, lavender and clary sage and finally ignites thanks to the pepper, woods and base blend of vetiver, cedar and patchouli.

France Women’s Prize: Parisian Musc de Matière Première

Coming from a line of perfumers for seven generations, authors of remarkable fragrances – from Narciso Eau de Parfum Poudrée to Aurélien by Carine Roitfeld – and owner of his own field of centifolia roses, Aurélien Guichard launched his own fragrance line this year, soberly called Matière First.

His concept: always starting from an idea and a central ingredient, enhanced by magnifying certain facets and soothing others. Among his first six creations, we had a real crush on Parisian Musk, an ode to the seed of ambrette Peru, whose woody accents are sublimated by cedar essence Virginie and the musky facet, amplified by ambrettolide supreme and ambroxan linking the whole with subtlety and sensuality. 

Prix ​​France masculin: Rose & Cuir by Jean-Claude Ellena with Frédéric Malle perfume editions

Perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. The perfume editor Frédéric Malle. This meeting at the top has already produced refined scents: Angéliques sous la Pluie, L’Eau d’Hiver, Cologne Bigarade and Bigarade Concentrée. In this ultimate fragrance “inspired by the mistral”, we find the art of refinement; the absolute requirement of the author.

A feat that evokes a crystalline rose, recomposed without a flower petal but thanks to the Bourbon geranium and Timut pepper – with accents of grapefruit and rose, precisely. The fragrance darkens thanks to vetiver, cedar and especially a leather accord of rare elegance built around Isobutyl Quinoline –  a vintage molecule by Robert Piguet’s Bandit. Lesley Clarke, the CEO and co-founder of the Nicky Clarke hairdressing franchise, has launched her first business venture through her new company Planet Friendly Beauty.

Aldi and their iconic “Me-too’s”

Just in case you thought ‘me-too’s’ were a thing of the past – think again. Discount superstore Aldi’s new releases and re-releases will make for some bargain happy customers.

I think it would be fair of me to say that German superstore Aldi is no stranger to ‘borrowing’ ideas from brands. Their Jo Malone style candles, launched in 2017, have become the stuff of consumer dreams – they literally sell out as they hit the shelves. The retailer’s take on iconic scents such as Pomegranate Noir, Peony and Blush Suede and Lime, Basil and Mandarin at a fraction of the cost (with a slight name change in most cases) has kept bargain hunters very happy. The ensuing social media posts of ‘I managed to get these today’ and the frantic demands of ‘where from..which store. I’m in the car now’… are the stuff of marketing people dreams! The range is ever expanding with 2020’s recently added scents in home fragrance including; Bitter Orange, Rose Noir and Sweet Almond & Macaroon, so the demand for these £3.99 candles is most definitely still there!

And now Aldi, also popular for it much lauded skincare brand Lacura, is set to bring back its ‘dupes’ of some of the biggest and most iconic skincare launches.The collection of products is inspired by much loved premium beauty brands, such as; Pixi, Yves Saint Laurent, Liz Earle, Clinique and Elizabeth Arden to name a few and since special buys are only ever available for 2 weeks you can bet consumers are at the ready!

According to trade title The Grocer, Aldi has racked up double-digit value sales gains in the beauty category – thanks, mostly, to its ever-growing Lacura range. The figures show that there’s been a 14.1 per cent increase in Aldi’s beauty value sales – more than any other discount retailer, and ahead of Boots and Superdrug too. With these clever look-a-like launches it’s not hard to see why!

Really dry skin will always be grateful for an application of Clinique’s cult Moisture Surge, but fans say the Aldi alternative can deliver comparable results.

The Laura Glow Exfoliating Tonic contains the same percentage of glycolic acid (5 per cent) as the Pixi original, and the packaging looks strikingly similar too.

Kiehl’s prides itself on being the UK’s top luxury anti-ageing facial oil, and Lacura’s £5 alternative might not quite manage to knock it off its top spot – especially as it uses a different blend of essential oils. However, it does promise to rejuvenate your complexion while you sleep.

A cult beauty favourite, the Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is an icon on the internet thanks to its firming properties from the inclusion of Guaraná, a native Amazonian plant whose fruit contains one of the most potent forms of caffeine on the planet. Aldi’s version doesn’t contain the wonder fruit, but apparently offers comparable results in its equally colourful tub.

Fragrance from Finland

Scandinavia is not the first place that comes to mind when talking about perfumery. The hygge trend, minimalist beauty, natural ingredients and the now iconic Scandinavian red and white Christmas theme, but perfumery, no.

Swedish beauty is probably the most familiar to consumers with  brands such as Oriflame and Byredo, Björk & Berries, Agonist, NOT Perfumes, and & Other Stories. Some Danish brands are also familiar: Gosh, Ole Henriksen and Skandinavisk whilst less know Nordic fragrance & beauty lines include; Moods Of Norway, Eroma Perfumes, Ra Organic Skincare, Skin of Norway & Bad Norwegian.

However, all that is set to change as 2 new fine fragrance brands enter the scene this year.

Introducing Nakuna

Nakuna Helsinki is a new wave Nordic luxury perfume brand with a strong Nordic visual identity. The brand launched four unisex fragrances; Iho (skin) , Avanto (inspired by cold, watery perfection), Musta (black) Ralli (inspired by rally racing) and one female fragrance Mittumaari (Midsummer).

“Nakuna” means “naked” or “nude” in Finnish. The brand was conceived by Anu Igoni and Jaakko Veijola, who call themselves entrepreneurs and creative directors. The drawings for the packaging come from illustrator Matti Pikkujämsä. The photographs are by Markus Henttonen, while the face of the brand is Olivia Aarnio. The compositions for Nakuna Helsinki were developed by perfumers from the Swiss fragrance house Givaudan.

inspired by the peculiar nature of the Finnish people. Nakuna is the Finnish word for naked, and iho means “skin”. This fragrance refers to actual nakedness, but also to a naked, open mindset.

Finns are the strangest mix of shyness, introversion and boldness. People who would barely say hello to a neighbour, but are willing to bathe naked with total strangers. Think of Nakuna as a celebration of all sorts of naked bodies.
